Include storage conditions, Special Handling Codes, and the Special Service Request on the Air Waybill
This article is a basic guideline to prevent the receipt of FNA messages from airlines regarding temperature-controlled shipments. The creator of the Air Waybill (AWB) holds sole responsibility for the data entered on the AWB.
For comprehensive regulations on temperature-controlled air transport, refer to the IATA Temperature Control Regulations (TCR).
Additionally, it's essential to ensure accuracy and compliance with the IATA Temperature Control Regulations (TCR) to facilitate smooth temperature-controlled air transport operations and avoid any issues with shipment integrity.
Storage instructions
When dealing with temperature-controlled shipments, it's crucial to specify the storage instructions on the Air Waybill (AWB). This can be accomplished by detailing the storage conditions in the Handling Information section, along with the Special Handling Codes (SHC) and Special Service Requests (SSR).
Here's an example of how storage conditions can be outlined in the Handling Information section:
Special Handling Codes
To ensure compliance with e-freight standards, inclusion of Special Handling Codes (SHC) on the AWB is mandatory.
Upon correct entry of temperature conditions in the file, relevant Special Handling Codes already appear in the AWB editor.
Additionally, users have the option to modify, add or remove Special Handling Codes directly within the AWB editor.
Special Handling Codes for indicating temperature ranges
- ERT: Extended Room Temperature: +2°C to +25°C
- CRT: Controlled Room Temperature: +15°C to +25°C
- COL: Cool Goods: +2°C to +8°C
- FRO: Frozen Goods: -25°C to -15°C
- ICE: Dry Ice (DG): -80°C (Refer to IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations)
- RCL: Cryogenic Liquids (Full DG): -196°C (Refer to IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations)
IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR)
Special Handling Code for indicating the use of an Active Container for temperature maintenance
- ACT: Active Temperature Controlled System
Special Service Request (SSR)
It is essential to include the Special Service Request for all temperature-controlled shipments to ensure proper handling.
When the temperature range is accurately entered in the file, a warning will appear in the AWB editor, advising to include the IATA Pharma Code on the AWB.
To enter the Special Service Request information on your AWB, access the AWB editor and choose one of the options available under the IATA Pharma Code.
FNA rejection reason SSR01C: "INVALID OR MISSING SPECIAL SERVICE REQUEST"
When SSR information is absent in the FWB message, airlines may issue an FNA rejection with code SSR01C.
The solution is to include the IATA Pharma Code, as previously explained.
